Agilent Technologies and Sage Science Sign Agreement to Comarket Bioanalyzer and Pippin Prep DNA Systems

WALDBRONN, Germany, and BEVERLY, Mass., Feb. 1, 2011 — Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) and Sage Science Inc. today announced that they have signed a comarketing agreement involving Agilent’s 2100 Bioanalyzer, used for the detection and quantification of nucleic acids, and Sage’s Pippin Prep DNA size-selection system.

The agreement between Sage and Agilent includes the copromotion of the respective products and development of application studies that will leverage the synergies of the two systems for next-generation sequencing applications.

“We are very pleased to be working with Agilent; our companies’ products are clearly complementary for the size-selection steps in next-generation sequencing,” said Gary Magnant, Sage CEO. “The high sensitivity of the 2100 Bioanalyzer kits provides superb analysis of DNA size distributions, with minimal sample consumption.”

Proper preparation and quality control of the input sample, as well as the library, are essential to achieving high-fidelity data in the next-generation sequencing workflow. The Pippin Prep, which automates DNA size selection for creating libraries, together with Agilent’s 2100 Bioanalyzer, the market-leading tool for sample and library quality control, advances and streamlines sample preparation.

“The Pippin Prep instrument from Sage and Agilent’s Bioanalyzer together offer a synergistic set of tools that enable researchers working with next-generation sequencing platforms to advance their research faster and more efficiently,” said Knut Wintergerst, electrophoresis marketing and support manager, Agilent.

SAGE SCIENCE ANNOUNCES INTEGRATION OF PIPPIN PREP AUTOMATED DNA SIZE SELECTION SYSTEMS INTO THE BROAD INSTITUTE’S GENOME SEQUENCING PLATFORM

BEVERLY, MA, November 2, 2010 — Sage Science, Inc. today announced the sale of ten Pippin Prep DNA size selection instruments to the Broad Institute. Pippin Prep systems will be used in the Broad’s sample preparation workflow for next-generation DNA sequencing.
“We believe the Pippin Prep will significantly improve our sample prep processes,” said Robert Nicol, Ph.D., Director of Sequencing Operations and Technology Development at the Broad Institute. “The technology enables significant enhancements in sample yield, reproducibility and throughput.”
The Pippin Prep improves and automates size selection of DNA for next-gen sequencing library preparation. It replaces manual gel purification, saving significant labor while producing a higher-quality sample.

Sage CEO Gary Magnant added, “Our team is very pleased that the Pippin Prep has been adopted by the Broad Institute for high-throughput sample prep. Broad scientists are very thorough in their analysis, and their feedback was key to optimizing Pippin Prep performance for next-gen sequencing applications.”

DNA samples purified using the Pippin Prep system have shown higher diversity and higher recovery compared to manual gel extractions. The system provides the narrow size ranges desired, and virtually eliminates contamination by low-molecular-weight fragments and adapters. The result is a larger fraction of useful data output from expensive next-gen sequencers. The Pippin Prep provides flexible user control to quickly adapt to changing requirements in rapidly-evolving next-gen sequencing applications.

SAGE SCIENCE SIGNS CO-MARKETING AGREEMENT WITH ILLUMINA TO AUTOMATE DNA SIZING STEPS IN NEXT-GEN SEQUENCING SAMPLE PREPARATION

Beverly, MA—October 21, 2010—Sage Science, Inc. (a privately-held, MA-based company) today announced that it has signed a co-marketing agreement with Illumina, Inc. (NASDAQ:ILMN). Illumina and Sage have agreed to co-market the Pippin Prep system in an effort to provide automated gel technology for library size selection to Illumina sequencing customers.

The Pippin Prep automates size selection of DNA for next-gen sequencing library preparation, providing a labor-saving alternative to manual gel extraction and purification. Sage Science customers have found that sequencing libraries generated using the Pippin Prep have greater sequence diversity and less low molecular weight contamination than those produced by traditional gel methods, generating higher quality sequencing data, and more data per run.

After signing the co-marketing agreement, Sage CEO Gary Magnant stated, “We are pleased to be working with one of the pioneers of next-gen sequencing and we are excited about sharing the results of our efforts with the rest of the NGS community.”
